Tina Maze
The great skiing talent of Tina Maze, who hails from the small (skiing) country of Slovenia, became evident at a very early age. After initial winning all youth and junior classes in her country, she took victory in the European cup. At the age of 15 she contested her first world cup race, at just 19 she achieved her first world cup victory in her favorite discipline, the giant slalom, at the opening race in Sölden/Tyrol in October 2002. In addition, this race went down in World Cup history as the first ever event with three first-placed finishers. After two runs, two other female racers joined Tina Maze on the podium after having posted identical times. Tina, the light-weight racer with a height of 171 cm, had her best World Cup season in 2004-05 when she claimed as many as three triumphs. The win in her native Maribor was the most important one for her. In front of a crowd of 30,000 cheering compatriots she won the giant slalom. In October 2005 she managed to again decide the World Cup opener in Sölden in her favor, this time occupying the top position on the podium alone. After a large number of injuries Tina had a long wait for her sixth World Cup victory. It finally came in St Moritz in February 2008 – after entering the race as number 47 she delivered a dream run. In the process the pretty Slovenian skier and ALPINA athlete clinched the first victory in the women’s downhill discipline for her country. In the 2008-09 season she again delivered a strong performance in her best discipline, the giant slalom, clinching two World Cup wins (one of them in her native Maribor) and the World Championship silver medal. She was only able to get rid of her “silver spell” at the 2011 World Ski Championship in Garmisch-Partenkirchen when she won the gold medal in the giant slalom. By claiming silver in the super combi she caused another big surprise. Tina is always successful when no one expects her to be. After the World Championship she achieves two other wins and finishes the 2010-11 season in third place overall for the first time.
