Where everything is white in winter, the slopes are steep and we pursue our favourite pastime—carving turns into the snow—sheep graze in summer. Big sheep, small sheep, white sheep and black sheep. They all have one thing in common: wool. A raw material that has not only protected generations of people from the cold, but was also a valuable commodity and still is among mountain communities. In recent years, wool has been displaced by synthetic fibres as a material for sportswear. Now this warm, protective and natural material is experiencing a renaissance. Working with lavalan®, a Bavarian wool producer near Dinkelsbühl, ALPINA's developers have created something unique: PROLAN™. Wool that protects—not only from the cold, unpleasant odours or plastic in the sea. PROLAN™ is sheep's wool processed so that its cushioning properties go beyond the functionality of conventional protectors. What may sound unbelievable has been examined in numerous tests and confirmed by TÜV. The new ALPINA protector with PROLAN™ meets standard 1621-2 Level 1. PROLAN™ is an innovation unlike anything the sports industry has seen for a long time.

Technologies

lavalan®

lavalan® is a washable insulation material made of sheep wool, used as a padding in ALPINA ski helmets to provide extra comfort. The sustainably obtained lavalan® wool has both insulating and temperature-regulating properties, is breathable and prevents unpleasant sweat odours from forming thanks to the wool’s natural moisture management and the self-cleaning function of the wool fibres. European wool is exclusively used for production, the short production routes for which allow us to monitor animal welfare.

Prolan

PROLAN is a wool protector made of pressed sheep’s wool. The multi-layer structure meets the requirements for TÜV standard 1621-2 level 1 for protectors and has damping properties that are not impacted by temperature. The ergonomically adjusted protector plates are comfortable and breathable, creating a pleasant body temperature. The wool comes exclusively from European sheep and is a naturally renewable resource.
